Backpack

Deuter Futura Vario 50+10

I have travelled around the world with this backpack and it's absolutely phenomenal! I like that it can expand by 10L if needed but without the expansion is small enough to be considered CARRY-ON. This is huge. It has even passed the carry-on checks of discount airlines such as WOWair.

There are plenty of straps for expansion and the bottom compartment can be separated from the top through inner zips. This is great for carrying your sleeping bag, putting in a camera insert for hiking, or throwing in wet items such as swimsuits. I hook up my tripod to the side and put in a water bottle on the other side.

I've taken this thing hiking on the West Coast Trail in BC, trekking through the Andes in Peru, Iceland, scuba diving in Australia and the Caribbean and on numerous vacations in Europe. It still looks brand new.

TENT

TETON Sports Mountain Ultra 3 Tent

This tent is very lightweight. I have a 3 person tent because sometimes on group hikes you don't want to carry multiple tents. It was a trade-off between added weight and practicality. It's very well made and comes with a footprint. A footprint is basically a tarpaulin that you can put under your tent to provide added protection to the bottom of the tent. I have used it with some rope as a rain shelter when trying to cook during a downpour.

I've never had any water leakage and have hiked the West Coast Trail in BC, and Mt. Colden in the Adirondack Mountain range in NY with it. One of my favourite feature is the waterproof wings by the doors. You can store shoes underneath the main entrance and your backpacks or firewood near the back entrance. Nothing will be wet when you wake up in the morning!

Sleeping bag

TETON Sports TrailHead -7C Ultralight Sleeping Bag

This sleeping bag is very warm. It can handle Canadian spring, summer, and fall with no issues. I like that it has a 'foot box' to give you more space by your feet. Otherwise, it's warm, light, and comfortable. Simple.

Sleeping pad

Klymit Static V Lightweight Sleeping Pad

This thing is awesome! It's perfect for backpacking due to its size and weight. It's about the size of a small water bottle. 12 breathes and it's fully extended. If you pitch your tent on slightly rough ground, this pad will take away that feeling. It'll also keep you warm by creating an insulating space between the earth and yourself.

Camping stove

Etekcity Ultralight Portable Outdoor Backpacking Camping Stove

This stove is extremely lightweight and works even in windy conditions. It comes with a built in igniter and it hasn't failed me in my many years of use. It connects to trekking butane stoves that you can find in any adventurer or hardware store. Cheap and reliable.

POTS / PANS

Docooler® Aluminum Oxide Outdoor Camping Pot Set

I chose this set because each pot collapses into the other pots. It turns into a very small package that you can slip into your backpack. The non-stick coating makes it easy to clean. I usually store my cleaning supplies as well as the stove in the centre of the stack. This way I take out my pots and I have everything I need to get cooking.

head torch

Juzihao Zoomable Headlamp

This thing is BRIGHT! Very very bright. It lasts around 8 hours of continuous use on the low setting. The downside is that it uses a proprietary connector so you have to carry around it's special USB cable (included). I like that it comes with a car charger to keep it juiced up when travelling.

It's comfortable to wear and the battery pack sits at the back of your head so there are no lose wires. It's also tiltable and zoomable. I really like this light.

TENT TORCH

Canwelum Lantern

You'll see that I have a variety of lights. It might be overkill but there is nothing worse than having no light when out in the wilderness at night. This lantern is light weight but uses standard AAA batteries. I keep a couple of spares in my backpack. It hangs to the top of your tent and can provide good diffuse illumination to light up the tent while you're setting up or changing.

HAND torch

Linkax LED Handheld Flashlight

When I'm out and about, I don't carry around my head torch. This flashlight is plenty bright and also uses AAA batteries so the spares I have for my lantern can double as spares for this. When going exploring, if you plan to stay out past sunset, do not leave without a torch. It's very unwise and dangerous.

water filter

Sawyer Products SP128 Mini Water Filtration System

In many of my multi-day hikes, I have to rely on flowing water for cooking and drinking. There is a risk of Giardia infection from untreated water so I carry this filter wherever I travel. It's rated for 100,000 L of use so you won't need to replace it for your entire lifetime probably. It's easy to use and I've never gotten sick from the water while using this.
